Tadao Cern: “Simplicity is genius”

After a career in architecture and a 5 year focus on photography, Vilnius-based artist Tadao Cern (Tadas Cerniauskas)is currently concentrating on conceptual painting and installation art. When looking beyond the categories and labels attempting to define his work, one can discover the rich playground of a restless explorer always able to reveal the unexpected in the most obvious situations, and to change the meaning of common objects by generating new contexts and settings for them to feel alive, different, to amaze, challenge and interact with the viewer.

More than mere spectators, the viewers experience a fascinating process of becoming, a result of insatiable curiosity and continuous experiment, possible through defying the known rules and practices to follow the path to innovation.

Two of Tadao Cern&#;s projects &#; &#;Black Balloons&#;, selected among the Top 10 of the BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER  and showcased during the Cologne Art Fair, and &#;Chromatic Aberrations&#; &#; indicate an interest in minimalism and patterns, impermanence and imperfection.

The latest series of paintings, &#;Chromatic Aberrations&#;, celebrates flaws, reversing the idea of beauty as equal to perfection while also questioning man&#;s obsession with faultlessness. The technique, however, is complex and each painting can take up to months to finish in order to produce the ideal effect of these intentionally distorted patterns, as the artist explains in a recent interview.

&#;Black Balloons&#; is about unanticipated connections and contradictions highlighting an uncertain equilibrium, fragile and ephemeral &#; even the slightest movement can destroy the entire structure of the puzzling sculptural arrangements.

At first, two balloons were filled with two gases &#; one making the object lighter and the other heavier. It is this inspired switch of properties that allows for multiple visual representations.

Some balloons appear to reproduce the attraction and repulsion of magnets as if trying to separate although the string uniting them would not permit their isolated existence. In other cases, two parallel worlds seem to face each other without ever getting the chance to intersect. Finally, further experimenting with materials and ideas, there are the greater balloons, monumental in size, dominating the limited space, filling the emptiness with their imposing darkness.

And the gigantic human crushing balloon absorbing the whiteness with its presence.

The work of Tadao Cern reinforces the power of simplicity with a playful approach yet carefully planned aesthetic inserting a much needed moment of reflection in our everyday routine.

Chromatic Aberrations

I am looking for refinement in something that would be considered a blemish in photography.

It&#;s an extremely rewarding feeling to find beauty in imperfection.
I used to be an architect. Then I&#;ve decided to try something new and switched to photography. After a five year amazing journey, I&#;ve decided to step out of my comfort zone once again and search for something new.
This time I took a brush and started painting.

I consider these paintings to be a combination of my two former fortes &#; architecture and photography.

Black Balloons

For an extensive amount of time I had an idea to connect two balloons. I found a free minute between the other currently run projects, bought two balloons, and got overwhelmed by the result.
It was so unpretentious and so magical at the same time!

That opposition created by two very simple and playful objects once again brought a unique childlike sense of discovery.
This experience uncovers a lot and the more one looks at it, the more it becomes true: “simplicity is genius”.
